Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta

Autor tdomf_2061d | 20.07.2010 | Category MBA in India

The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) was established as the first national institute for Post-Graduate studies and Research in Management by the Government of India in November 1961 in collaboration with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, The Ford Foundation and Indian industry. The foundation stone of the Joka campus was laid by Sri Morarji Desai, the then Dy. Prime Minister of India on Dec 15, 1968. The Institute moved to its present campus in 1975.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The 135-acre campus of the Institute has a cluster of Administrative and Faculty Office Blocks, fully equipped classrooms, seminar and conference rooms, Management Center for Human Values, residential quarters for students, faculty and staff members, library, an executive training complex, a bank and a post office. The 750-seat state-of-the-art Auditorium is the latest addition to the campus. The institute is located in its own sprawling 135 acres campus in Joka, away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis.

The campus has four hostels that provide single room accommodation to students with modern amenities and recreation facilities. All the hostels have their own coffee shops, canteens, photocopy units and printer rooms. Every room has its own network connection, which enables fast and round-the-clock Internet access. The hostels also have intercom facility in all the wings. For the visitors, the institute provides guest-rooms. To take care of the married students’ needs, the institute has provided separate accommodation facilities for them.

The institute has always attached special importance to the use of information technology by the academic community. The institute deploys a network of around 1000 PCs, 4 digital Alpha servers, one IBM RS-6000 server and seven Novell file servers. Through a 2MBPS and 64 KBPS radio link with VSNL users get unlimited access to the Internet. A host of electronic databases like Bloomberg, Prowess and Capitalize providing information on the global and Indian corporate world are also accessible likewise. The institute’s Bidhan Chandra Roy library was started initially with a liberal Ford foundation grant, and over the last 36 years has grown into a major learning resource center in South Asia.

Placement

The most sought after companies in sectors like Consulting, Financial Services and IT made quite a number of offers at IIM Calcutta. IIM Calcutta proved to be the hunting ground for top notch consulting companies with firms like McKinsey and Company, The Boston Consulting Group and AT Kearney looking to recruit in large numbers. One of the noteworthy aspects of Placements at IIMC is the increase in number of sectors for which students were recruited. Companies in sectors such as Insurance, BPO, Shipping and Holiday Services made their presence felt on campus in 2007. An important aspect of placements in 2007 was the phenomenal success of the Lateral Placement Programme meant for students with significant work experience. Despite a much smaller pool of candidates with work experience as compared to the previous year, there was an increase in both the number of recruiters and the number of offers made. This year, companies participating in the Laterals Programme also recruited for positions abroad. IIM Calcutta encourages and nurtures independent thinking and the ability to explore unconventional avenues. As in the past, this year as well, there were students who chose the entrepreneurial path over the relatively easier corporate route to success. One of these students, the founder of the Adventure Club at IIM Calcutta, which is the first of its kind in any Management School in India, has decided to follow his dream of scaling greater heights by starting his own organization

Admission Procedure

Admission to the post graduate programme is through a three stage process where different abilities of the candidate are assessed. The IIM’s conduct the Common Admission Test (CAT) for the assessment of the Quantitative, Analytical, Verbal, Logical and comprehension skills. Upon clearing this stage the candidate is further tested for his/her attitude and aptitude for management education through Group Discussions (Stage 2) and Interviews (Stage 3). Admission is dependent upon various other parameters which keep changing in different years. A good score in CAT would mean a good chance for an admission as the written test is given the maximum weightage among all three stages. A three year’s bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline recognized by the AICTE / AIU.

The uniqueness of the selection process resides in identification of appropriate managerial traits in aspiring candidates and rigorous assessment through a variety of ways, which are essentially experimental in nature. These are: -

Leadership —-character and integrity

Sensitivity to social inequality, injustice,

Adversity quotient—ability to face adverse situations

Ability to work in teams

Humility
The candidates with unusual background are carefully looked at before a final decision is taken. Continuous improvements in selection processes are effected through relentless innovations such as pregrading of application forms on multiple dimensions, discussion and situation analysis in groups, iterative stage wise computer analysis of selection data, accelerated admission to outstanding applicants.

The sole purpose of this exercise is to maintain objectivity and also to resist societal pressures throughout the selection process. And it is a matter of great satisfaction to SPJIMR community that the efforts have borne fruits in ample measure.

Indian Institute of Management, IIMA

Autor tdomf_2061d | 17.07.2010 | Category MBA in India

In just four decades the Indian Institute of Management, IIM-A, has traversed the path from being India’s premier management institute to a notable international school of management. It was the noble idea of Dr Vikram Sarabhai and a few other public spirited industrialists realizing that agriculture, education, health, transportation, population control, energy, and public administration were all vital elements in a growing society and that it was necessary to link these meaningfully with industry. The result was the creation of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1961 as an autonomous body with the active collaboration of the Government of India, Government of Gujarat, and industry.

The empowerment of the faculty has been the propelling force behind the high quality of learning experience at IIMA. The Institute had initial collaboration with Harvard Business School. This collaboration greatly influenced the Institute’s approach to education. Gradually it emerged as a confluence of the best of Eastern and Western values.

The reputation of IIMA owes much to the exceptional calibre of its faculty. The Institute prides itself on creating an environment of substantial academic freedom overlaid by rigorous, self-imposed standards of excellence and socially responsive practices.

The faculty willingly submit themselves to a unique, rigorous, open, and continuous process of appraisal and feedback from the students. This enables the faculty to fine tune course contents and delivery mechanisms. Through a variety of committees, faculty play a hands-on role in the governance of the Institute and assume total ownership of collective decisions.

Research is at the core of IIMA and provides a major interface with the wider academic and business world. It provides new theoretical frameworks that enable reassessment and refinement of current practices and thinking. Groundbreaking interdisciplinary research by the faculty feeds directly into an enhanced learning environment at the Institute and indirectly to a wider audience of practicing managers and teachers of management.

A high degree of attention is paid to the relevance, breadth, and depth of research. Focus areas have included social marketing, productivity, women’s issues, human resource development, optimisation models, organizational learning, institution building, management and leadership excellence, and public sector management.

While some research is internally driven, several projects are commissioned and funded by national and international organizations such as the Ford Foundation, UNO, World Bank, NCERT, Planning Commission, Central and State ministries, and industrial agencies.

The IIMA campus attracts students and visitors alike. The stark and majestic buildings in brick have simple forms and bold openings, creating monumental spaces with minimal decor. Powerful beams of light and strong shadows create a dramatic and serene ambience that has inspired generations of students to achieve excellence while retaining humility.

IIMA has always enjoyed special preference of Indian as well as foreign recruiters on account of its excellent performance sustained over a long period of time and its strong brand image.

Heading India’s top corporates and contributing at all levels in various global conglomerates, the Institute’s Alumni form a sustainable competitive advantage for the organizations that recruit them. Over the years, the market for the Institute’s graduates has remained bullish, as freshly placed recruits continue to deliver on their promises and satisfy their employers.

Placements at the Institute are handled entirely by the students, from the corporate interactions during the year to the Placement Week, every year. Even though the placements are spread over November to March, corporates gauge students throughout the year.
