Stanford Graduate School of Business

Stanford University, founded in 1891, is a private, comprehensive, research-intensive university, where teaching, learning and research are part of a single enterprise. Stanford’s enterprising character draws from its Western location and from the legacy of Jane and Leland Stanford.

stanford-graduate-school-of-business1Its areas of excellence range from the humanities to the social sciences, engineering and the sciences. The layout and character of Stanford’s Quadrangle were developed by Frederick Olmsted, designer of New York’s Central Park. The 8,180-acre campus includes Moorish Spanish and French Romanesque architecture. It is located in Stanford, adjacent to Palo Alto, 30 miles south of San Francisco.

The Business School is a resource for the entire University in understanding the art and science of successful managed organizations. We are developing new multidisciplinary programs with the seven other schools to help understand issues facing society and to bring about important changes.

stanford-graduate-school-of-businessStanford University is governed by a board of trustees, in conjunction with the university president, provosts, faculty senate, and the deans of the various schools. Besides the university, the Stanford trustees oversee Stanford Research Park, the Stanford Shopping Center, the Cantor Center for Visual Arts, Stanford University Medical Center and many associated medical facilities (including the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital), as well as many acres of undeveloped foothills.

The Stanford Graduate School of Business offers a general management MBA degree and thus does not offer degrees in specialized areas such as finance or marketing, although it does offer certificate programs in public management and global management. The school also offers the Sloan Master’s Program, a full-time ten-month MS in Management for accomplished mid-career executives and entrepreneurs, and a Ph.D. program. The school also offers a number of dual degrees jointly with other schools at Stanford University including Education, Engineering, Law and Medicine.

Stanford’s MBA program was ranked #1 in the 2008 U.S. News and World Report ranking, #3 in Financial Times and #6 in Business Week business school rankings in 2006. Forbes ranked Stanford Business School #6 in its fourth biennial ranking of business schools in 2005, up from #7 in 2003. The Economist magazine ranked Stanford #4 in its 2005 business school ranking. In its biennial report “Beyond Grey Pinstripes”, the World Resources Institute, and the Aspen Institute identified the Stanford Graduate School of Business as the leader among business schools that are incorporating academic content involving ethics, corporate social responsibility, and environmental sustainability into their curricula and activities. The ranking was based on an extensive survey in which schools were asked to describe cases, research, and course content that address these issues.

Tepper School of Business

Autor Reviews | 17.07.2010 | Category MBA in USA

The Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon consistently ranks among the top business schools in the world. The programs offered at Tepper place a strong emphasis on general management, but Tepper is also known for a wide range of specializations, including Finance, Entrepreneurship, Operations Management, and Information Technology.

A commitment to knowledge discovery via interdisciplinary collaboration is at the heart of Tepper’s academic philosophy. As a decidedly small school housed within a decidedly small research university, Tepper is a conservatory of innovation. The linkages across campus are numerous and an inherent part of the B-school’s culture. Partnerships that would be considered unconventional at other schools are what they do best. Tepper students partner with students, professors and researchers in other schools and centers, such as engineering, robotics, biotechnology and life sciences, product design and computer science.

carnegie-mellon-universityThe Tepper School’s primary MBA degree is a two-year, full-time program, during which most students complete an internship in the summer between the first and second year of study. Students have the option of waiving the summer internship and taking classes, which allows full-time students to complete their studies in 16 months. Working professionals in the Pittsburgh area may also complete the MBA degree in the evening as members of the flex-time program.

The mini-semester system is half the length of a traditional academic semester, creating four mini-semesters per academic year. Each mini-semester is 7.5 weeks long, and students typically take 5 different courses each mini-semester. This system, which was pioneered by the Tepper School, allows students to take more than 32 different courses while enrolled in the MBA program. The Tepper School prefers this structure as students can gain exposure to a greater breadth of topics, as well as several electives.

The MBA curriculum is designed to increase in complexity and application throughout students’ time at the Tepper School. The first year builds a fundamental skill set in the core disciplines, including Finance, Operations, Marketing, Strategy, Organizational Behavior and Technology. Year two advances the theories and analytical framework developed in the first year to provide breadth and depth in areas that support corporate strategy and general management as students complete three to four concentrations in specific functional areas. In lieu of selecting three to four general management concentrations, second year students may complete courses in satisfaction of specialized “MBA Tracks”.

The Management game is another very interesting part of the MBA program at Tepper. It was first introduced by Carnegie Mellon in 1958 and has been adopted by many other leading business schools as an effective business simulation model. Tepper students work with an external board of directors to manage a multinational corporation, guiding the organization through a wide range of issues including global expansion, labor negotiations, operations, market share, shifting economies and financial performance.

The Barco Building: Home of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. The JD/MBA program is the only Tepper School joint degree taught partially outside of Carnegie Mellon. They also have a Capstone project, which is like a culmination of all the students work at Tepper. It is akin to a final year project where the students work with various firms on real world problems.

The General Management MBA Track, the Core MBA degree, serves as an umbrella academic option due to the flexibility associated with multiple concentrations. The General Management MBA Track complements the eight other Tepper MBA Tracks: Biotechnology, Computational Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Integrated Product Development, International Management, Operations Management, Operations Research, and Wealth and Asset Management.
