It seems Samsung are really stepping on it in the 5 megapixel cameraphone race. In a stark display of audacity, the G800 is pitched as a digicam that can make calls. We usually deal with gadgets that are the other way around but we’ve been eager to test the Samsung G800 ever since its official launch back in late October. As you may recall, we were lucky to be there, but rubbing shoulders is nothing like getting our hands on the handset sporting the first 5 megapixel camera with optical zoom. So sit back and get ready for Samsung G800, one of the most hyped handsets lately.

Key features:

* 5 megapixel auto focus camera with 3x optical zoom and xenon flash
* Large 2.4″ QVGA 256K color display
* EDGE and 3G (with HSDPA)
* Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP support
* Comfortable keypad
* Stereo FM radio with RDS
* Stylish design

Optical zoom is not new to cameraphones – the 902 and 903 models by Sharp, as well as Nokia N93 and N93i, were equipped with cameras with optical zoom a good while ago. But in Samsung G800 it goes with a five megapixel sensor and a xenon flash, which makes this handset’s camera unmatched, at least in the number of features it offers. We are yet to see if quantity means quality but our first impressions back in October were surely positive. Finally, we have to say that the G800’s greatest market share rival will be Sony Ericsson’s top shelf cameraphone K850. It has the virtually the same specs save for the optical zoom and, in our point of view, the price will play a major role in this duel. We will refrain from including Nokia N95 here because the smartphone functionality puts it in a slightly different niche than the twosome in question.

Now, there is only one last thing that we need to mention before we cut to the chase. The unit we had for testing purposes was a final beta release candidate, so you might expect some minor changes and improvements in both software and hardware before the handset officially hits the shelves – however we don’t expect them to be many. We didn’t have any problems with it plus it came in the retail packaging that will see the handset selling.

The U900 soul is Samsung’s flagship phone of 2008.It has dual-screen touch-sensitive controls and metal casing along with a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, 3G video calling, MP3 player, FM radio and plenty of memory. Some people think that the ringtone and call volume are too quiet. The phone is available in Graphite or Silver.

At the first look, you can tell that the Soul is something different from the usual Samsung slide design. It might be called as the next-generation slide phone. The body of the phone is made from metal, giving it a high quality feel, like one of Nokia’s premium handsets. The sleek, minimalist design and the way that the thumb rests securely on the base of the slide is superb. The slide moves smoothly up to reveal a flat keypad.The U900 is ultra-slim at 12.9mm thick, and is almost exactly the same size as the old Samsung D900.

The feature that truly sets the U900 apart from previous slide phones from Samsung is the touch-sensitive navigation keypad. The phone has a small touch-sensitive screen placed below the main LCD display. The touchscreen is icon-driven and the icons change according to the menu selected. It’s very similar to the one used in the LG Venus and the Samsung E950.

It’s the first Samsung phone to incorporate a 16 million colour display. It has fast 3G with download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. It has a powerful camera, similar in quality to the G600’s. The camera on the U900 is very good. There’s also a music player that can handle a wide range of formats, plus an FM radio, and the usual Bang & Olufsen power amplifier for high-fidelity audio.

One feature worth noting is the generous amount of internal memory (100 Mbytes), as well as the option to add a microSD memory card. Other standard features such as email, document viewer, Bluetooth, offline mode are all present. Just one gripe – it’s triband, not quadband.

The latest Armani mobile phone from Samsung is a slim and light weight phone that comes embedded with advanced features and functions. The phone is available in a choice of two colours-beautiful silver and black. The large high screen, easy navigational keys and neat user-friendly QWERTY keypad allows the users to operate high-profile functions with ease and comfort. The smooth curvaceous Armani phone is light-weight as it weighs only 85 grams, including chargeable battery.

The handset is good to hold, as it measures 87.5mm in height, 54.5mm in width and 10.5mm in thickness. The 2.6 inch wide TFT screen has a high screen resolution that provides up to sixteen million colours. To add fun and visual experience, the phone comes with integrated 3 megapixel camera, music player and Wi-Fi technology. The high-end connectivity features such as Bluetooth, USB support, SyncML, GPRS and EDGE allow users to share or transfer the data, images, video and music with other compatible devices. Moreover, the users can surf the web using its built-in WAP browser that will give them a unique web browsing experience.

The Samsung Armani absolutely epitomizes its namesake. Decked out in a glossy black steel case, the Armani has a very sleek and attractive design that earns its fashion phone branding. It comes in a very fancy black box showcasing it like a piece of jewelry, with a soft microfiber cloth case. Measuring 3.44 inches tall by 2.14 inches wide by 0.41 inch thick, the Armani is one of the more compact touch-screen handsets we’ve seen and can be easily slipped into a jeans pocket. It’s a good thing it comes with a microfiber cloth case, since the glossy black surface does make it prone to fingerprint smudges.

Designer by name & designer by nature, the Samsung Armani is a head turning fashion phone. This stunning fashion phone comes with a 2.6 Inch high colour touch screen which makes using the Armani phone & fun & visual experience. It comes with a built in music player, 3 megapixel camera & Bluetooth technology.

Released for Sprint, the Samsung PM-A740 (SPH-A740) features a 0.3-megapixel camera, able to capture pictures with up to 4x digital zoom, choose from a variety of different color tones, brightness levels, and white balance settings, customize camera shutter sounds, and attach fun frames. The PM-A740 features a 16-bit color 96 x 96 pixel STN outer display and a 16-bit 128 x 160 pixel STN main display.

The Sprint PCS PM-A740 (Samsung SPH-A740), which offers a basic feature set and a quality VGA camera with plenty of customization options. The handset even gives you the ability to create slide shows with your photos and use them as screensavers. While it’s a fun and functional mobile with cool blue coloring, it is still a cell phone, and unfortunately its audio quality is not up to par.

Also, business users might want to take a pass and look for a mobile with more capabilities such as a speakerphone or Bluetooth. At $230, the price is a bit high, but you should be able to find it for less with service. Samsung has a reputation for making sleek and stylish flip phones, and the Sprint PM-A740 is no exception. The handset sheds the traditional all-silver casing, though, in favor of an eye-catching midnight-blue cover with a ridge-textured design, giving it a more casual look. Identical to the Sprint VM-A680 in size (3.3 by 1.8 by 1 inches; 3.4 ounces), the mobile is compact and fits easily into a pocket, although the stubby antenna adds some unwanted bulk. Still, it is solidly constructed and comfortable to hold.

As with the latest crop of Samsung phones, the Samsung SPH-A740 (Sprint) boasts a spacious, 1-inch-diagonal external screen that shines bright with 65,000 colors. It displays the time, the date, signal strength, battery life, and picture caller ID (where available). While the backlighting goes completely dark, you can use the display as a viewfinder for self-portraits. The camera lens and flash sit just above the screen.

The Samsung SPH-A740 (Sprint) has a respectable feature set for casual chatterers and shutterbugs, but mobile professionals may desire a more business-friendly phone. The handset has a 299-name phone book with room in each entry for six numbers, e-mail and Web addresses, and birthday info. Users can distinguish your contacts by assigning them to a caller group or pairing them with a picture or any of 29 ring tones, 10 of which are polyphonic (32-chord).

Other goodies of Samsung SPH-A740 (Sprint) include a healthy helping of organizer functions, such as a calendar, world and alarm clocks, a task list, a memo pad, and a calculator. For messaging fanatics, you have text and multimedia messaging, instant messaging, and e-mail. And while there is voice dialing, three-way calling, a voice recorder, and a WAP 2.0 Web browser, the lack of a speakerphone, Bluetooth, or at the very least an infrared port might have business users looking elsewhere.
