Autor Reviews | 16.02.2009 | Category Sony Mobiles
For the first time in the walkman phone family, the Gesture Control feature will make its debut in W380. The Gesture Control is a motion detector that gives the user the powerful functionality of snoozing the alarm or muting your mobile phone just with the wave of a hand giving the truly “hands free” experience. Aside from this new innovation brought to the market by the W380, Sony Ericsson is also presenting the W380 in a clamshell form factor with two available colors; Magnetic Gray and Electric Purple.
Another hip feature of the W380 is the way the hidden display lights up when you tune in to the radio or when you receive a call. The Sony Ericsson W380 may seem subtle and dull when looked at from the outside but you will be surprised how it comes to life when you receive a phone call or when playing music. The W380 can literally dance to the beat with the phone’s different lighting effects that can be assigned to callers or can match the tempo of your music. After all, the W380 is a walkman mobile phone and the W-series from Sony Ericsson has the reputation of providing its users with exceptional multimedia functionalities.
Music controls, which have become a standard with the walkman mobile phone family, for the W380, are located on the outer part near the external screen. Sony Ericsson presents the W380 in three different variants; the W380c which supports GSM900, GSM1800 and GSM1900 is for use in China; the W380a which can accommodate network frequencies of GSM850, GSM1800 and GSM1900 is available in North America, while the W380i which can be used in other parts of the World supports frequencies of GSM900, GSM1800 and GSM1900 which assures users around the World that they can enjoy the different features of the Sony Ericsson W380 wherever they are.
Aside from the differences in supported network frequencies, all variants of the W380 have similar features. The slick and compact body of the W380 which measures 92mm x 49mm x 16mm and weighs only 100 grams incorporates a 1.3 megapixel camera that can produce pictures with 1280 x 1024 pixels resolution, can also record video, which the user can view on the internal display screen that measures 1.9 inches with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels and can display 256k colors. The OLED external screen whichSony Ericsson W380 Open has a resolution of 36 x 128 pixels can display information of the caller and information on the music track that is currently playing. The clamshell designed W380 also features a web browser, e-mail client, RSS reader and other valuable essentials from the Sony Ericsson W-series family. All W380 variants have EDGE and GPRS connectivity capability.
Another useful software application bundled with the Sony Ericsson W380 walkman mobile phone is the Media Manager PC which allows the user to point, click and drag music, videos and photos from your personal computer to the mobile phone. This software application allows the user to transfer files with ease and convenience with music files being automatically converted by the software to the correct format. The W380’s external music controls gives the user the power to play, skip forward, skip backward or pause the music easily with its one touch buttons.
The 14Mb internal memory of the W380 is augmented by the expandable memory slot which can accommodate a Sony Memory Stick Micro format. Sony Ericsson W705

Sony Ericsson has introduced it s latest Walkman phone series Sony ericsson W705.It is a slider model and much dedicated towards music edition.Sony Ericsson W 705 comes with a 2.4″ QVGA display capable of showing up to 256K colors. It is enhanced with a 3.2mp camera ,FM radio with a RDS.It uses quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support. It incluides Wi Fi faciltiy but Gprs is absent in this mobile. It feautures Shake control and SensMe much needed for a walk man series and has 120 MB of internal memory which can be extended by M2 card slot.
Along with it 4GB memory card included with the phone package which adds to the memory of the phone. It will be released in two model 705,705u the latter of which is for orange color phones. It will become available in Luxury Silver and Passionate Red color versions.
Including Wi-Fi in the W705’s list of connectivity options is a big step as downloading music from Sony Ericsson’s store, or whichever you prefer, will be so much faster, more convenient and less costly. It also allows you to stretch the NetFront Access browser a little more than usual and take advantage of YouTube and the Sony Ericsson picture blogging service too.
The W705 may not be much to look at, although seeing the metal casing for real will probably change this, but it does weigh just 98 grams and have a thickness of 14mm, so it will be very pocket friendly. The quoted standby of 400 hours and a talktime of 10 hours is equally impressive.
Sony W350i
Autor tdomf_2061d | 27.05.2008 | Category Sony Mobiles
The W350i, sports a design which will differentiate it from the crowd of others. The keypad of the phone is covered by a lid that flips down when you are using the phone. Something like Ericsson T28. When the W350i’s cover is closed, there are dedicated music controls for the Walkman player. These are not actual buttons, though. When you press on them, you are actually pushing the numeric buttons below the cover.
The phone measures 104 x 43 x 11mm and weighs a mere 80g, the W350i is a very petite phone with a design that’s almost reminiscent of a certain Apple music player. Although small in size, the buttons’ loose, springy feedback and decent size make the keypad very easy to use.
In addition, removing the battery cover (to access the memory card slot) also requires extra care. The cover itself is wedged in the center back of the phone and we had to pry open the thin plastic cover. We got used to that eventually, but it wasn’t a reassuring feel.
In essence, the W350i is a basic eye catcher with flip-phone elements that double as a music player. When the lid is closed, you are essentially looking at a dedicated Walkman and there is no way to access the phone functions. To operate the music player, there is a sliding lock on the top edge and a Walkman button on the side of the phone. The latter allows the user to switch between the My music and Now playing screens. The music controls on the flip cover double as navigational buttons for the Walkman player.
Once you open the cover, it reverts to a regular handset. If you are listening to music, the tunes will continue to play in the background. Note that the sliding lock affects only the music player when the lid is up and cannot be used to lock the phone’s numeric keypad.
Beyond the music player, the feature set on the tri-band W350i is pretty average for a budget handset. There’s a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth stereo A2DP, FM radio (requires headset to be plugged in as aerial), onboard speakers and personal organizer applications. The W350i comes with 14MB of in-built memory and the retail set will ship with a 512MB Memory Stick Micro card.
Sony Ericsson P990i
Autor tdomf_2061d | 27.05.2008 | Category Sony Mobiles
The Sony Ericsson P990i is the latest smart phone to come from the Japanese-Swedish collaboration. The P990i is a smart phone that will please tech-minded consumers and professionals. One of the major additions to the P990i is its inclusion of Wi-Fi support, a feature that even some of the more popular smart phones don’t have.
The keyboard of P990i has a slightly soft feel but is easy to type on. Much like the P910i, the Sony Ericsson P990i is a tad on the large side when compared to regular phones, but its bulk is standard for most smart phones. Measuring 114 x 57 x 25 mm and weighing 155g, it’s actually slightly smaller than the latest Palm Treo 700p. Its color scheme has not changed much from its predecessor’s, retaining the same silver finish all the way around. The phone feels comfortable in the hand, though you might want to flip the keypad flap down when holding it next to your ear for additional comfort.
The keypad is one of the most notable design features of the P990i. The numerical keypad flips down to reveal a QWERTY keyboard on the main body of the phone. This is a big departure from the P910i, which had the keyboard on the flap itself. When flipped up, we found the buttons on the numerical keypad to be spacious and tactile for easy dialing. The keypad has the standard navigation keys placed along the top, which consist of two soft keys, a five-way navigation toggle, a back button, and a clear button. As for the QWERTY keyboard, we found the slightly rubberized keys easy enough to press, but they are so tiny and crowded together that it still took us a while before we felt comfortable typing with it. You also have the option of using the stylus for the handwriting-recognition feature for text entry if you prefer. Both the keypad and the keyboard have a blue backlight when activated.
With the keypad flap up, you see only a 2.5-inch diagonal display. However, when the keypad flap is flipped down, you get the full 2.8-inch, 262,144-color TFT screen in all its glory. The display is simply gorgeous and very easy on the eyes. The backlight timer is adjustable, as is the brightness setting. There are also a few other differences when the flap is flipped down vs. when it is flipped up. With the flap down, the display becomes a touch screen and certain features such as the Web browser and the RSS feed reader are made available. If you find it a pain to keep on flipping the flap up and down to gain access to these functions, you can actually remove the front flap entirely with an included screwdriver. You will still be able to make calls via a touch-screen keypad.
On the very top left of the phone’s front is a small VGA camera specifically designed for video phone calls. On the left spine are a media player button, a jog dial, a back button, and a keylock slide. We found the jog dial and back button especially useful for one-handed navigation, and we hardly needed to use the navigation controls on the keypad at all. A dedicated camera button, a Memory Stick Duo slot, and a dedicated Internet button are housed along the right spine. On the back of the phone, you’ll see a circular camera lens cover. The cover slides clockwise or counterclockwise to reveal the camera lens. There’s also a self-portrait mirror, a flash, and a small speaker. Because of the position of the camera lens, the P990i almost looks like a real digital camera when viewed from the back.
The P990i comes with a few accessories, such as a convenient docking cradle, a USB cable, and a pair of stereo earphones. It also comes with a small plastic front cover to replace the keypad flap, in case you decide to remove it.
Let’s begin with the basics. Each entry in the P990i’s address book can hold up to two phone numbers, an e-mail address, a picture caller ID, a birth date, a street address, and notes and can be assigned to a group as well as one of 23 polyphonic ring tones. The P990i comes with 60MB of internal memory, plus a 64MB Memory Stick Duo included in the package for additional storage. Business users will be especially pleased with QuickOffice, which lets you view, edit, and create Word and Excel documents, a viewer that lets you read PDF and PowerPoint documents, and a built-in VPN client. There’s also a video phone feature that utilizes the front VGA camera for video calls. Though this may be intended for videoconferencing, we can’t imagine this being too useful for the average consumer.
Other basic features include text and multimedia messaging, a speakerphone, a calendar, a task list, a notepad, a calculator, an alarm clock, a voice recorder, a vibrate mode, a business card scanner, a stopwatch, an RSS feed reader, and a full Opera Web browser. For connectivity junkies, along with the 3G/UMTS and Wi-Fi support, you can also use the phone as a Bluetooth modem with your Bluetooth-enabled laptop. For e-mail, you can connect via SMTP, IMAP4, and POP3 accounts, and the P990i even supports push e-mail for the BlackBerry via the BlackBerry Connect solution. The included PC suite helps you manage all of these PIM functions and more.
