For those of you who’ve seen “Crank”, the so called “action packed thriller” and enjoyed it, good for you and I’m sorry. I’m glad that you enjoyed it, but sorry that you didn’t watch a better one because in my opinion, “Crank” made much sense in terms of having a storyline then a babies Pampers having the sense of staying dry 24 hours after being used on a newborn. “Crank” is an action packed movie all right and it does have the thrills and chills of an action movie, but I couldn’t find the storyline/plot anywhere because nothing made sense (in fact I’m still looking for it even after having read the 20 or so words on the back of the DVD box).

Apparently “Crank” is about a man who is dying and is trying to find the culprits who were trying to do him in. He buys some crack from the black market and sniffs it until he feels better (sure, when you gotta go, you might as well live it up I guess). He even goes into the drug store and swipes several boxes of nose spray because a customer tells him it has some kind of chemical that’ll make him feel better (I didn’t and I had to go run to the toilet to make myself feel better after sitting hrough another piece of “cinematic brilliance–NOT!”).

The acting suffice as to say was pretty good despite what the cast of “Crank” had to deal with it. The direction was pathetic because all the twists and turns were hard to swallow and follow and they were harder to swallow then a pretzel with a Molson Canadian (ouch, now that’s pretty hard). The cinematography was okay and the pace was pretty consistent (faster then Speedy Gonzales and “Angulay! Angulay!).

If you like action packed movies that doesn’t have much of a plot (Those Die Hard movies at least had somewhat of a plot to it) then by all means see this movie, but let me try and save you some time when I say, hey, the weather’s getting warmer; so why don’t you go outside and enjoy it rather then watch this disappointment. “Crank” left me feeling “cranky” after viewing it and rightly so (pun intended). Also don’t get the soundtrack because the consistency with the music was apalling (like mixing opera with heavy metal–PEW!!).

Hellboy 2

Autor tdomf_2061d | 14.02.2009 | Category English Movies

When it’s a battle between this world and its invisible counterpart, you just have to call in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence to take charge. That’s precisely what happens in the second part of Hellboy. The red, hard-scaled, hulk-sized Hellboy, rejected by this world and the other, along with his other BPRD colleagues, are set to save the earth from the ruthless mythical creature that threatens to unleash an unstoppable army that will wipe away all existing life on earth.

hellboy-2This is the tale of powerful leader Prince Nuada who treads the world above and the one below and commands an unstoppable army of creatures. It’s up to the planet’s toughest, roughest superhero to battle the merciless dictator and his marauders. Hellboy is helped on his mission by his pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz Sherman, aquatic empath Abe, and protoplasmic mystic Johann Krauss, the newest member of the BPRD. How they put and end to Nuada’s force of goblins, fairies and other magical creatures is the story. If you liked the first part, you’re sure to love the sequel!

Hellboy II: The Golden Army is a 2008 comic book film based on the fictional Dark Horse Comics character Hellboy. The film is directed by Guillermo del Toro and is a sequel to the 2004 film Hellboy, which del Toro also directed. Ron Perlman reprises his role as the titular character. The film was commercially released on July 11, 2008 in the United States and Canada.

Hellboy 2 ends up being a fun, beautiful looking fantasy / adventure type movie that manages to be a tiny bit better than the first one. No, it’s not as funny and the lack of David Hyde Pierce was painfully obvious, but other than that it’s a truly fun time at the theaters. Del Toro does it again! Overall I give Hellboy 2 a 7.5 out of 10.

I realize it’s not easy to get anyone to feel sorry for movie critics. We work from home in our pajamas, see all the movies early and for free, and spend most of our free time bitching to you about what terrible taste you have in cinema. But keep in mind we often get stuck seeing movies we would never, ever see on our own– and I don’t just mean bad stuff like Confessions of a Shopaholic, or tawdry genre stuff like Underworld.

I mean stuff like Friday the 13th, a movie I hated, moment for moment, more than any I’ve seen this year. I scare easily, and have no fond childhood memories of Freddy or Jason or any supernatural killer targeting teens. I have no idea what appeal anyone can find in this tired formula, especially when it’s used so poorly here, 13 years after Scream parodied it so brilliantly.

But the people in the theater with me screamed at all the right moments, and even got in a few unintended laughs, so Friday the 13th seems to have a few things going for it. Even so, there are enough needless musical cues, fake scares, and suspense-free moments for even gigantic horror wimps like me to see through it for the trash it is. Whether or not it’s good, entertaining trash probably depends on how much you grew up fearing Jason’s hockey mask, but fans looking for that same horror jolt they got from the first film 19 years ago will probably find themselves too old for this shit.

It’s not much that the movie traffics gleefully in the genre cliches– hot dumb teenagers trapped by a killer in the woods– but that it doles it all out so haphazardly. The movie opens powerfully by recreating the end of the first movie, the final surviving camp counselor (attractive female, of course) chopping off Mrs. Vorhees’ head. Then there’s a second prologue that theoretically distills everything you’re looking for into 10 minutes, but drags on even longer than you’d think possible for something so content-free. There’s sex and drugs, but when it comes time for the gore, director Marcus Nispel has no idea how to pace things to create any kind of suspense. By the time they bite it you’re ready, not so much for entertainment but just to finally move on to the real story.

When we do, we’re “rewarded” with the most obnoxious group of teens this side of The Hills, a handful of bleached blond dudes complemented by some girls in tight T-shirts and the token minorities, an Asian guy (Aaron Yoo) and a black guy (Arlen Escarpeta) who obviously aren’t allowed their own love interests. The gang has piled into the summer home belonging to Trent (Travis Van Winkle) and his parents, and we learn that we’re supposed to hate Trent both because he’s a jerk to his girlfriend and to kindly strangers, and because he’s obsessed with keeping the house clean. Meanwhile his pretty, virginal girlfriend Jenna (Danielle Panabaker) is sympathetic when they run into Clay (Jared Padalecki), a soulful guy looking for his missing sister Whitney (Amanda Righetti), who just happens to be one of the victims we saw Jason slice and dice at the beginning of the film.

Or did we? As soon as we meet Clay it’s pretty obvious that Whitney is alive somewhere, just as it’s obvious in which order the stupid teens will die, and how. Jason shows up to dispatch them all in various creative ways, including a truly surprising arrow to the head in one scene and later, a disappointingly generic tire-gauge-to-the-throat. Since this is a franchise reboot, rather than a sequel, Jason doesn’t feel the pressure to top his previous antics, and the screenplay follows suit by failing, at every turn, to add anything new to the formula. The flawless production values and rock and roll songs are great, sure, but a reason to care about the characters or even a hint of wit could have gone a long way toward validating this movie’s reason to exist.

But as I said at the beginning, I’m an automatic hater– it takes a lot for me to enjoy any slasher movie, which I admit makes me a less-than-objective critic. Whatever you loved about the original movies, be it the blood and guts or the blatantly obvious sound cues that SOMETHING SCARY IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN!, you’ll find it here in full force. But mostly Friday the 13th is proof that horror movies haven’t progressed at all since Jason first emerged from Crystal Lake, and bothering with the new stuff is mostly going to be exercise in gruesome disappointment.

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

Autor Reviews | 13.02.2009 | Category Hollywood 2009

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is an upcoming science fiction/action film due for release on June 24, 2009. It is the sequel to 2007’s Transformers, which was the first live action Transformers film. Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg return respectively as director and executive producer, while Shia LaBeouf reprises the role of Sam Witwicky, the human caught in the war between Autobots and Decepticons. The film introduces many more robots and the scope has been expanded to numerous countries, the most important of which is Egypt.

transformer-2-revenge-of-the-fallenThe main hurdle in getting the film produced was overcoming the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike, as well as possible strikes by the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild. Bay met his shooting date with the help of previsualization and a scriptment by his writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and series newcomer Ehren Kruger. Shooting from May to November 2008 predominantly took place in the United States, including the majority of scenes set in outside countries, a minimum of which was conducted in those actual nations.

Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) discovers something about the origins of the Transformers and their history on Earth. The evil Decepticons need to capture him for information. The climactic battle takes place at the Giza pyramid complex, where a temple is located within. Lorenzo di Bonaventura explained the film will show the Transformers who visited Egypt before the pyramids were built, and “all our heroes end up here because of the Decepticons’ masterplan.” Furthermore, Egyptian hieroglyphs resembling helicopters and other present day vehicles in real life will be explained in the film as being depictions of those Ancient Cybertronians who visited Earth.

This time, the story finds Sam and Mikaela under attack by the evil Decepticons because of something Sam has learned about the origins of the Transformers and their ancient history on Earth.

To acquire this knowledge, the invading Decepticons need to capture Sam instead of kill him. Meanwhile, the U.S. military and an international coalition has united with the good-guy Autobots to fight back the villains’ attack.

Some of the most important newcomers are in the robot cast: Decepticons Soundwave, a fearsome communications expert, and Devastator, whose arms and legs are built out of other Transformers. And on the Autobots’ side is Jetfire, a villain whose age and broken-down physicality leads him to help the Autobots.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Autor Reviews | 13.02.2009 | Category Hollywood 2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is an upcoming 2009 fantasy-adventure film, based on the novel by J. K. Rowling. It is the sixth film in the popular Harry Potter films series. David Yates, the director of the fifth film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, returned as director for this film. David Heyman and David Barron are producing the film, and Steve Kloves, writer of the first four films (but not the fifth), has returned as screenwriter for this film.[4] Filming began on 24 September, 2007 and the film was originally planned for a UK and U.S. release on 21 November 2008, but on 14 August 2008, it was announced that the release date for the film was to be pushed back to 17 July 2009. Like the previous film, the sixth film will be simultaneously released in regular cinemas and IMAX 3-D.

half-blood-princeThere are a number of changes from the book in the film. Much of the book’s ending has been changed, with the climatic battle and Dumbledore’s funeral being removed. Heyman commented that the end battle was removed to “[avoid] repetition” with the forthcoming adaptation of Deathly Hallows. The funeral was removed as it did not fit with the rest of the film. The collapse of a Muggle bridge mentioned briefly in the book serves as the film’s opening sequence. All but two of the memory scenes, including that of the Gaunts, have been cut. Only the flashbacks of Tom Riddle at the orphanage and Riddle asking Slughorn about Horcruxes (shown twice) remain. Yates said they made the decision to compress the memories, but still have some really cool ones. Characters who are cut include the Dursleys, Kreacher, Dobby, and the Muggle Prime Minister. However, Quidditch, being excluded from the previous film, returns.

The film is scheduled for release in the United Kingdom and the United States on 17 July 2009 and Australia on 16 July 2009. It was originally set to be released on 21 November 2008 and 11 December 2008, but was pushed back by eight months, despite being completed. Warner Bros. executive Alan Horn noted that the move went ahead “to guarantee the studio a major summer blockbuster in 2009,” with other films being delayed due to the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike. The box-office success of summer WB films Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and The Dark Knight also motivated the decision. An unnamed “rival” studio executive told Entertainment Weekly that the move was to “stop next year’s profits from looking seriously underwhelming after the phenomenal success of The Dark Knight,” as “they don’t need the money this year anymore.” Dan Fellman, WB head of distribution, said that the studio had considered the date change for three to four weeks prior to the announcement, but gave it serious consideration a week before they came to their final decision.
