S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) is a constituent unit of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which was founded in 1938 by the then Kulpati Dr. K.M. Munshi and 53 other eminent professionals. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950. It is a trust of repute and eminence and is universally recognised for its educational as well as cultural activities.

In India, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has more than 37 institutes, over 106 Kendras (Centers) 11 Colleges, 78 schools. It also has international centers in the UK, USA, Canada, Portugal, South Africa, Kuwait, Mexico and Australia.

The guiding philosophy of SPJIMR is influencing practice and promoting value based growth. The institute has an enviable track record of recognizing the needs of the society, especially the under managed sectors, and responding with quick and appropriate responses.

Today, SPJIMR has to its credit five centers with multifarious activities, two-year full time postgraduate diploma (equivalent to MBA) and a few continuing executive education programmes. It has also made its presence felt in global arena and has truly become a larger than B-school.

SPJIMR is an autonomous management institute with entrepreneurial agility that has made it totally self-financing, personal freedom with professional accountability and corporatized culture, structure and processes

SPJIMR also figures in top ten B-schools South Asia. SPJIMR has locational advantage of having a sprawling campus in the heart of Mumbai, the commercial capital of the country

SPJIMR has developed a unique selection process for its various programs.

Focus on mere IQ as the most important criterion is avoided. Instead, it is deployed as a cut-off point and is strongly supported by assessment of consistency of academic record, thorough testing of subject knowledge and basic skills, scientific assessment of behavioral profile and raising eligibility levels for applying to the institute.

The uniqueness of the selection process resides in identification of appropriate managerial traits in aspiring candidates and rigorous assessment through a variety of ways, which are essentially experimental in nature. These are: -

Leadership —-character and integrity

Sensitivity to social inequality, injustice,

Adversity quotient—ability to face adverse situations

Ability to work in teams

Humility
The candidates with unusual background are carefully looked at before a final decision is taken. Continuous improvements in selection processes are effected through relentless innovations such as pregrading of application forms on multiple dimensions, discussion and situation analysis in groups, iterative stage wise computer analysis of selection data, accelerated admission to outstanding applicants.

The sole purpose of this exercise is to maintain objectivity and also to resist societal pressures throughout the selection process. And it is a matter of great satisfaction to SPJIMR community that the efforts have borne fruits in ample measure.

Amitabh Bachchan is the older of the two sons born to Teji Bachchan and Harivansh Rai Bachchan , the acclaimed Hindi poet. He was born In Allahabad on October 11 1942. He receved his schooling at Sherwood College, a boarding school in Nainital, and then moved to Delhi University for his Arts degree. His first film `Saat Hindustani’ sank without a trace. However, fame was his in `Zanjeer’, and he was instantly accepted (and adored) in the role of the `Angry Young Man’ an image that became his calling card. `Deewar ‘ followed and further reinforced it.

He became the hero who filled people’s hearts with hope. In his films, he fought the corrupt system and the power brokers a situation that appealed to the youth of the early-seventies. Amitabh emerged as a different kind of an action hero, as a Messiah, a Superhero, who seemed like an answer to all people’s problems. Analysing this actor’s impact on society would probably need a thesis by itself.

Amitabh Bachchan has appeared in over 150 films, many of them, particularly those from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, were huge hits. He married Jaya Bhaduri, herself an accomplished actresses, at the peak of her career.

Due to his enormous popularity, not to mention the close association with the Gandhi, family, he was elected to parliament with a huge majority from his home city of Allahabad. But his stint in politics came to an abrupt end when he was embroiled in some political scandals. He gave up his seat in parliament, swearing off politics forever. His name was later cleared from the controversy.

He took a sabbatical from films for a few years. In this period, the actor grew a beard, flaunted his grey hair and floated his company ABCL. The exercise caused him more pain than gain. After five years, he announced his return to the 36mm but the magic had faded. He was no longer the `Angry Young Man’ As an actor, he cannot be faulted, yet `Suryavansham’, `Bade Miyan Chotte Miyan’, `Lal Badshah’, `Mrityudand’, `Major Saab’ each one of them crashed at the BO.

Recently, Amitabh took on a new role, as a host of the television show `Kaun Banega Crorepati’ and created history once again. He is back where he belonged. In people’s hearts. In their homes of people four times of week, charming them in that deep baritone of his. The Big B on the Small screen.

The new millennium has seen Amitabh Bachchan in the spotlight again, albeit in a different avatar. Bagging the No.1 spot on the BBC’s millennium poll earlier in the year, he has undoubtedly been this years household favourite having charmed prime time audiences with his Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, which changed the TV ratings game in India. Now he joins the 400 other wax statues at Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum in London. After an initial survey conducted by the British Tourism Authority to select an Indian film star for a statue, Bachchan polled the largest number of votes among the short-listed stars for the honour which included Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai and Anil Kapoor,

The United States of America is sometimes called “The Land of Opportunity,” and in no area is that more true than when it comes to travel. The 50 individual states of America compare favourably in size and population with the various countries of Europe. The USA offers a wonderful combination of large cities, smaller towns, farmlands, forests, deserts, mountains, prairies and much more. The climate ranges from tropical to Arctic, although most of the country is temperate, with four distinct seasons. With a over 300 million people, the United States is the third most populous country in the world.

The East coast has many cities worth exploring, such as New York, a unique melting pot of cultures with the world’s most famous skyline; Boston, also known as “Bean Town”; Philadelphia, the country’s first capital and an important political and cultural centre for the American Revolution. The capital city, Washington, D.C., home of the President, has more museums than one can see in a year. Then there is Atlanta, a fast-growing city where the 1996 Olympics were held. Miami is one of the most popular international tourist destinations in the world, known for its Latin Culture, never ending night life and amazing beaches.

The West Coast, from the state of Washington to California, is well known for its relaxed atmosphere.

Los Angeles is a micro universe. You can find everything from rags to riches, from Tinseltown to East LA to Disneyland. Head south to visit Orange County’s Huntington Beach for the ultimate experience in Surf City USA or head to the Californian Riviera city of Laguna Beach to check out the famous art scene. LA is also home to a little place called Hollywood. More remote wilderness style trips await in Colorado. The Rocky Mountains boast world class white-water rafting, scenic vistas, and old west charm.

Drive north on the Pacific Coast Highway – possibly one of the country’s greatest drives – to gorgeous San Francisco, one of America’s most agreeable cities; home of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, the prison island. From sparkling beaches and fog enshrouded mountains, the “City by the Bay” offers the ultimate in a relaxed lifestyle in the middle of a big city. Travellers will find wonderful day-trips to the beaches, wine country, and deserts.

Further north is Portland, Oregon. Here are the International Rose Test Garden, which has over 7,000 rose plants of approximately 550 varieties and Forest Park, the largest urban park in the United States. The city is widely recognised as a model of sustainable development and smart growth.

Further north yet is Seattle, the northernmost principal city in the contiguous United States; it is even further north than Ottawa, yet has a far milder climate. The Pike Place Market is the oldest farmer’s market in the United States and filled with stalls containing everything from produce to cutlery. A highly cultural city, Seattle is a major centre for the performing arts and has internationally acclaimed opera, ballet, and symphony companies. Seattle is surrounded by water and beaches, so if time permits, take a scenic ferry ride directly from the city centre to one of the many offshore islands, such as quiet, charming Bainbridge.

Located on the shores of the Great Lakes, Chicago, the “Windy City”, is where the Skyscraper was invented. Even today, downtown Chicago is the beautiful early laboratory of this new form of building. The city is also vibrant with an excellent Jazz and Blues scene, two great ballparks, good food and much more.

Dallas is an international city often known for the television show of the same name, Walker, Texas Ranger, and the Dallas Cowboys football team — and Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. But Dallas is also home to the original Gallaria mall, the original Neiman Marcus store, The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, and many other sports teams, shopping malls, conventions, and events.

Houston is a city that exemplifies Texas and acts as a microcosm of the state. With a dizzying array of attractions, festivals, restaurants, shopping, and local get-aways; the nation’s fourth largest city is home to a wide array of sights for all to enjoy. It’s also home to one of the most diverse populations in the country.

Las Vegas is paradise for anyone who likes to roll the dice. No need to go to Paris, Rome or Egypt-all the best monuments have been copied and can be found right there in the desert.

Kentucky is a hidden gem for travelers interested in exploring natural artifacts; such as Mammoth Cave, the largest recorded cave systems in the world. The numerous campgrounds, state parks, and recreational lakes draw cost-conscious travelers from all over the South. The rolling hills of Eastern Kentucky sport some of the finest horse parks in the United States. The Kentucky Derby Festival includes a huge balloon race, air show, and spectacular fireworks performance as just three of its features. For some the race is just an afterthought.

Florida is popular with anyone looking for sunshine, beaches and hurricanes. Tampa, Orlando and Miami are ideal bases from which to explore the Sunshine State.

The New England States are magnificent. From land to sea, you have it made here. Magnificent beaches in the summer, beautiful foliage in the fall. Connecticut is a favorite, a small activity packed state, with something new around every corner. Two of the best casinos in the world, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods. Quaint little cities by the sea, historic places nestled in the woods. Everything you could want is less than 2 hours away: Beaches, woods, farms, waterfalls, sea and fresh water fishing, wineries, wildlife, both land and sea, wonderful places to shop and eat.

All over the United States you will find excellent National Parks, which are great places for hiking, biking and other activities. Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon are well known, but there are many more places of great beauty in God’s own country. The Appalachian trail, running from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin in Maine is unique. More than 2000 miles long, a ‘thru-hiker’ needs one season to walk it from end to end.

Exploring the United States by car is so easy due to many factors: The highway system is excellent, signage will tell you where the attractions are, at all major interchanges there are many hotels, motels, restaurants and gas stations to help you in your travels and the tourist attractions are just endless wherever you travel. Much of this ease in travel is due to the trucking industry, so take advantage of the best highway system in the world and get on the road and explore the USA!

Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. is junior U.S. senator from Illinois and a strong contender for the Democratic party nomination for the 2008 U.S. presidential election, along with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 and gained national recognition for his keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and for winning the U.S. Senate race in Illinois by a large margin, during a time of Republican dominance.

Born of a racially mixed union between his black Kenyan born father (Barack Obama Sr.) and white mid-western born mother (Ann Dunham), Obama stands 6′2″, with a handsome face and baritone voice. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and moved to Djakarta with his mother and step-father for four years. He returned to Hawaii at the age of ten where he lived with his mother until his high school graduation.

He went on to study political science and international relations at Columbia University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1983. After his graduation, he worked for a church-based non-profit organization for three years before going to Harvard Law school in 1986, where he was elected the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. He received his law degree in 1991.

Obama then returned to Chicago and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1993 until 2004. In 1995, he published a book of memoirs, Dreams from My Father. He served the Illinois State Senate for seven years before being elected to U.S. Senate in 2004. In 2006 he published The Audacity of Hope, a detailed account of his political positions on various issues.

In February 2007, Obama formally announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential race. He’s the author of two best-selling books. In 2005, Time dubbed him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Barack Obama is said to be a thoughtful, independent-minded leader with an even-keel temperament and charismatic speaking skills.
Unlike most politicos, Obama is known for being unafraid to speak hard truths when necessary. Although armed with shrewd sensibilities, he’s sometimes slow to recognize viable threats to his agenda.

In 2002, Barack Obama publicly opposed the Iraq War, and continues to call for withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. He urges universal health care, and if elected president, promises implementation by the end of his first term.
