  1. Review No. 1 on Lancaster University by John — September 21, 2008 @ 4:09 am

Im currently a third year at Lancaster Uni and studying Business Studies, so as you will guess I know quite a bit about the place! The main reason that I chose to go to Lancaster was the reputation of the management school. I was informed that it is thrid best in the country (with London School of Economics and UMIST holding 1st & 2nd place). When doing a degree these days I find it important that you got to a Uni that is somewhere that you not only like the feel of but also is one of the best places to do your course as these days there are lots and lots of people doing degrees and you want to get the best for yourself (i.e stand a good chance of getting a job!) As a third yeas who finishes soon, I have experienced both the good and bad points of Lancaster Uni and I will try and sum them up quite easily!
    Cons

    - Lancaster Nightlife isn’t fantastic, but as long as you’ve got a good group of friends who are up for a laugh you will have loads of fun. There are three main clubs - Liquid, Toast, Brookes oh and theres the Sugahouse which is owned by the Student Union! Personally I love Liquid on Mondays and Wednesdays as Im a fan of RnB !
    - Campus lifestyle in first year can get tedious and annoying! I come from a big city, so to feel enclosed in such a small environment don’t get me wrong was nice as you meet loads of people but can get intimidating!!! However after first year you can shack up with some buddies so you get the best of both worlds!

    - The campus car parking facilities are rubbish! If you are a 1st year you cannot have a car on campus - only 2nd and 3rd years etc are allowed but even then the permit costs about £50 for a year and your not always guaranteed to find a space in 10mins!
    - Some of the rooms on campus which you live in first year are vile! I would never stay where I stayed again! However, lots of new accomodation has been introduced this year and campus is rapidly expanding. My friends brother is in the new blocks and they are fab, mod and trendy with intercoms etc - however Im not sure how much it costs. Where I stayed in first year (bowland college) I had not en-suite bathroom just a large bedroom and a shared kitchen and that set me back aprrox £45 a week (including electricity, gas etc) In your room you get a phone, internet access (but you have to pay for this) desk, bed, draws, shelves etc!

    - You have to get a bus into town or taxi’s which can get annoying because if you had your car there with you in first year you wouldn’t. Bus return = £1.60 ! Taxi at nite (after 12) approx £8.00 !
    - First lectures start at 9 last lecture is 5-6!

    - No shops in Lancaster City Centre, shops in Lancaster include - New Look, Topshop, Bay Trading, Superdrug, Boots, Game, Next, Monsoon, Etam, M & S, Ann Summers, BHS, Barrets Shoes, Allsports, Au Naturel, HMV, Woolworths, Dr Krueger - however the Train Station is a minute walk from the centre and you can pop on the train to Preston for about £3 return and it takes about 15mins on the train!! Loads of shops in Preston!!!
    Pro’s

    - Management school is top notch, get a good degree from a fab place! Very helpful depts if you ask for help! Lectures are an hour long an not compulsory (but you should go) and tutorials are generally compulsory (attendance is registered)
    - On campus there are loads of facilities inlcuding post office, waterstones, greggs, newawgents, natwest bank, barclays bank, spar, LUSU shop, charity shop, gym (with badminton, aerobics, yoga, weights, pool etc…) library, loads of coffee shops, computer labs, laundrettes, pizza place, chippy, housing office, 2nd hand computer shop etc……

    - You can walk all the way down the spine of campus and not get wet when raining (as its all under cover)
    - Undercover Bus Interchange - buses literally every 3 mins into Lancaster Town Centre

-Even have a bus service to the Trafford Centre on a weekly basis (i think its weekly!) that you can get on from campus.
    - Night Bus for women only!

    - Infant School for people with children!
    - Rooms on campus for families.

    - Lancaster House Hotel is next door to the Uni, so ideal for relatives or friends who want to stay
    - Eveyr individual college within the Uni has a bar (thats 8bars on campus) - drinks are also cheap!

    - Excellent Hair Salons in Lancaster City Centre - ‘Changes’ and ‘Jo & Cass’!
    - Yearly Gym membership is cheap approx £130- for the year for students

    -Campus doctors surgery!
